Leafs Smash Dixon 35-6
Despite all the smoke Dixon put up before the game, that's pretty much all there was to the Green Machine's
victory Friday evening, October 6.
Dixon fumbled the opening kickoff, the Leafs recovered and on the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Kyle
Reade weaved and dodged and sprinted 53 yards and that was it. Dixon was reeling and never recovered. The
Leafs went on to win 36-6 on the Dukes' gridiron. "That buckles you when you come out in the first round and
someone plants one right on the chin," remarked Leaf Head Coach Denny Diericx.
"Kyle was a load. Your offense is only as smooth as your quarterback and he's the smoothest around. He ran
well and threw the ball well. Big players step forward in big games and Kyle stepped up in this one." Reade
threw for over 100 yards and amassed nearly 75 yards on the ground.
The two quick tallies dovetailed with Coach Diericx's game plan. "We wanted to hog the ball and get two quick
scores on the board. We didn't want to be just one play away all the time." Joe Puentes boosted the Leafs up
another notch midway through the opening stanza on a one yard blast. Dixon closed within a TD early in the
second period on a four yard pass play from Duston Bock to Nate Macklin (the two-point conversion failed). But
that was as close as the Dukes Came.
Four minutes into the second frame, Puentes slammed across again from the one and with a trio of Kyle
Wickwire PAT boots, the Leafs had plenty of breathing room at 21-6. In the final period, Reade notched his
second TD of the bout on a much, much shorter jaunt of two yards. With just under three minutes left in the
game, Kyle Sullivan broke into the clear and scampered 45 yards for a TD.
Wickwire was a perfect five of five in conversions for the evening. Though he didn't score, Jarad Putnam led the
Leaf ground attack with over 110 yards rushing. In the second half, a stingy (to put it mildly!) Leaf defense
smothered the Dukes and held them to zero yards on the ground.
Following the game, many Dixon fans (on the old message boards) felt the game was a fluke and hoped to get
another shot at the Green Machine. They got their wish in the second round of the 4A Playoffs as the Dukes
traveled to Geneseo for the rematch. The Leafs took a 2 point lead into halftime before exploding in the third
quarter to take a commanding 44-14 lead enroute to a 44-30 final.
