Leafs Defense Stops Manual
Leafs Roll In Showdown Of Unbeatens

Special teams and defense were the keys in the second round playoff victory over previously undefeated Peoria Manual on
Saturday, November 6 as snow swirled in the bitter cold at Peoria High School Stadium. The cold was a definite advantage to
Geneseo's massive rushing attack.

An 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jon Smith turned the momentum completely Geneseo's way. "I thought they were
going to come back until Jon's return," commented Coach Denny Diericx "That turned the game around."

It didn't start off well for the Green Machine as it was stopped on its first possession on four downs. On Manual's second play
from scrimmage, their tailback broke loose for 72 yards and a touchdown. The extra point kick made it 7-0 for Manual. It was
only the second time Geneseo had trailed all year. And it turned out to be the last.

A 33 yard kickoff return by Brad Johnson set up great field position for the Leafs on Manual's 49 yard line. The Green Machine
slowly took the ball towards the goal line led by a 16 yard pass completion from Nate Durick to Matt Cook. A 4 yard give by
Jeremiah Shoemaker with just over three minutes left made the score 7-6.

Manual started to drive after the kickoff, but sacks by Jeff DeFauw and Phil Smith forced Manual to punt. Neither team could
score on its next possession. With just over three minutes to play in the half, Geneseo took over on Manual's 45 yard line. A key
pass from Durick to Mike Poppen for 22 yards led to a 3 yard bolt up the middle by Eric Newton for a score with 17 seconds left
and Geneseo's first lead of the game. The two point conversion made the score 14-7 in favor of Geneseo.

The second half started out all Geneseo as they stopped Manual's first drive quickly. Geneseo's first drive of the half took nearly
seven minutes off the clock as they drove from their own 41 yard line. Eric Newton capped off the drive with an 18 yard dash
into the endzone. The kick made the score 21-7. Both defenses played tough the next few drives until a 54 yard flea flicker set
up a Manual touchdown to make the score 21-13.

That's when Jon Smith took the kickoff 80 yards, breaking two tackles and cutting up the middle from the sidelines. The extra
point made it 28-13. From there on out the Green Machine's defense shut down Manual's offense. "Our defense played
outstanding," replied Coach Diericx. "We made a couple of mistakes on the 72 yard run, but other than that the guys did a great

Geneseo capped off the scoring with three and a half minutes left on a 35 yard bulldozing run by Shoemaker. The kick rounded
off the scoring making it 35-13. Coach Diericx expected Manual to pass about 20 times during the game, and they shut down the
passing game effectively. "I knew they would pass outside on slant plays which left our linebackers open to stop the run," said
Coach Diericx. "We had a fresh defense. That week off before the playoffs really helped."

Late in the game, a fight broke out between Manual and Geneseo resulting in a clearing of Manual's bench, which was near the
altercation. The Leafs' coaching staff kept the Geneseo players on the sidelines. The two teams did not shake hands at the end
of the game. Leading the Green Machine on the ground was Shoemaker with 91 yards and 2 touchdowns and Eric Newton with
68 yards and two touchdowns. Durick was 4 for 7 passing with 52 yards.

This was a much anticipated rematch between the Green Machine and the Rams. The previous season, the Green Machine
defeated the Rams 13-10 in the first round of the 4A Playoffs. That article will be featured as a bonus this coming Monday!
