Blocked Field Goal Secures GHS Win
A defensive stand and a blocked field goal in the final seconds saved the Green Machine from elimination on November 8 in
Kankakee. Despite maintaining their lead for the entire game, Geneseo found themselves on defense with Kankakee McNamara
in scoring position late in the fourth quarter. But the Green Machine held strong and emerged with a narrow 16-14 victory over
the Fighting Irish in the second round of the playoffs on a very cold and windy day in Kankakee.
The Green Machine did what they wanted to do Saturday, which was keep the ball away from the Irish as Geneseo marched
down the field and chewed up the clock, which ended with a 27 yard field goal by Luke Lembke to put the Green Machine on the
board. "We kept plugging away and wanted to keep the clock moving and keep them off the field," said head coach Larry
Johnsen. "We rose to the occasion and we are playing another week." To extend Geneseo's advantage, Michael Atwell took the
ball into the end zone from 1 yard out in the second quarter. The PAT was blocked as Geneseo took a 9-0 lead into halftime.
The Fighting Irish got on the board in the third quarter on a 10 yard run by Derek O'Connor. The PAT was successful to cut the
Green Machine lead to 9-7. In the fourth quarter, Lembke put Geneseo up 16-7 on a 3 yard run and he also added the PAT.
McNamara found a groove later in the fourth after a 5 yard TD strike to Tyler Boerschig from Matt Lambert. The Leafs lead was
cut to 16-14 following the PAT.
Late in the quarter....and with time winding down, the ball was in the hands of the Irish who drove the ball downfield into
Geneseo territory. McNamara was in scoring range at the 2 yard line. The ball was then pushed back 5 yards following a false
start and McNamara was unable to reach the end zone. With fourth down, the Fighting Irish went for the win on a 20 yard FG
attempt but a swarm of Green Machine defenders pushed their way through the and the kick was blocked by Adam Haviland to
preserve the victory for Geneseo! "We did what we had to do and I am really proud of our guys!" said Coach Johnsen.
This article failed to mention that the Irish only ran 3 offensive plays in the first quarter and 9 overall in the first half. Green
Machine ball control was on full display that day in Kankakee! Also this victory over Kankakee McNamara pushed the Green
Machines record versus the Irish to 4-0 with previous victories in 1977 (55-8 - 3A Quarterfinals), 1978 (14-7 - 3A Championship),
1999 (42-21 - 4A 1st Round). The Green Machine returned to Kankakee exactly one year later and upped their record over the
Irish to 5-0 in another nail biter (26-24).
